Instead of adding to the footprint of the existing home, the team installed a retractable roof over the dining room (background in photo). Fir wall panels and wood and camel tones warm up the white rooms. New double-pane glass windows, recycled denim insulation and radiant heat greatly improved the comfort of the house.

This room is also where Jeff intervened with the decorating. Lesley assumed they would paint the original paneling — she just didn’t know what color — but Jeff insisted they keep the wood as it was. “In here he totally put his foot down,” Lesley says. So it stayed. Lesley hung large, colorful pieces on the wall to distract from the paneling. But she says she has gotten used to it and likes how cozy the room feels when they build fires in winter.

Get this look: Hit your local salvage yard, flea market or swap meet to reclaim a weathered wood piece from its former factory glory. Old floors are great for new paneled walls or islands, and old window frames and doors can become new wall hangings, headboards, tables and art.

Even at the entrance of the house, you are forced to walk past a reclaimed driftwood wall, which is the kitchen, on your left and into the living room. It is only there that you get the full experience of the view.
